The LEED'r

Hi and welcome to the LEED'r !

by Daryl Dworkin

Whether you are just getting "into" the green movement or you have been for sometime then you will enjoy the LEED'r. LEED* is an acronym which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED* is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.

As the LEED* designation suggests excellence in green building and design, so does the LEED'rrepresent excellence in reporting, educating, and following the environmental arena.

A worldwide paradigm shift is occurring regarding the way people are perceiving the impact of the environment upon their everyday life. A global change in laws, policies, and ideals are causing a phenomenon to occur. More and more people are realizing that the green revolution -is not just a passing fad - but is here to stay. Green building alone has increased four-fold over the last few years. The Leed'r will be bringing you compelling stories and cutting edge news in and around the green community...stay tuned...

The WashPost gets it wrong again: The replacement of old technologies by new ones drives growth

In yesterday’s Washington Post, Peter Whoriskey argues – predictably for the Post these days – that making lightbulbs more efficient puts Americans out of work. The last US-based GE factory to make old-school incandescent lightbulbs is going out of business, and here is Whoriskey’s explanation:

During the recession, political and business leaders have held out the promise that American advances, particularly in green technology, might stem the decades-long decline in U.S. manufacturing jobs. But as the lighting industry shows, even when the government pushes companies toward environmental innovations and Americans come up with them, the manufacture of the next generation technology can still end up overseas.

But the real story is, as usual, more complicated. First of all, the U.S. is not the only country to move beyond wasteful incandescent lightbulbs, which burn out ten times faster than fluorescent bulbs. The European Union, Australia, Canada, Russia, Brazil, and Argentina are among the other countries that have passed regulations to phase out these old-school bulbs. So it isn’t a question of the U.S. driving these manufacturers overseas; instead, we are talking about a global shift to newer, more efficient technology...read on

The Struggling Economic Recovery

Gloomy economic indicators continue to raise questions about the sturdiness of the global economic recovery. Weak global demand for American exports, a near 10 percent U.S. unemployment rate, and sluggish bank lending (Bloomberg) have led to doubts about the Obama administration's efforts to stimulate the economy with a new jobs bill (WSJ). Questions also loom about the Federal Reserve's decision to keep interest rates low indefinitely and how long markets will tolerate high U.S. debt...read on

Ocean's Color Affects Hurricane Paths

A change in the color of ocean waters could have a drastic effect on the prevalence of hurricanes, new research indicates. In a simulation of such a change in one region of the North Pacific, the study finds that hurricane formation decreases by 70 percent. That would be a big drop for a region that accounts for more than half the world's reported hurricane-force winds...read on

Wheat Supplies and Food Fears

As the Russian landscape burns and Eurasia's agricultural zone sizzles in a record heat wave, the agricultural commodities markets are threatening to spawn a food crisis akin to the one in 2008...read on

Is this really a cause for concern? Or is it just another "fear factor" thrown out there by the government?
